Introduction
Welcome to the virtual practice project! The purpose of this exercise is to widen your awareness to the process of starting a medical practice. Every physician must have an idea of the inner workings of a medical practice. Even the physician that will sub-specialize or work within a hospital environment must understand basic concepts of business. Through this project, you will gain knowledge of the health care industry that will be helpful as you advance in your career.
The goal is to assemble a new practice in an 8 months period. The class will be divided into four groups. Each group will develop their own private practice. The practices are new start up general pediatric practices located in different areas of the country. Modules and assignments will be posted on the virtual practice website. Each assignment will have a goal and list of objectives. There will also be an opportunity to meet with the preceptor on a regular basis to discuss the pertinent issues in each module. A schedule is available with the designated weeks for these discussion groups.
All groups will compete against one another for the title of best practice. The best practice is one that is well defined and able to function both financially and medically. The practice must meet all of the objectives and goals listed in each assignment. A reward will be given to the group who attains the best practice title.
